Recently, I've been delving into an R&D project that's completely changed my perspective on the power of combining real-world footage with 3D elements. Inspired by traditional VFX workflows, I wanted to explore the potential interplay between the real and virtual.
To experiment, I used freely available assets: drone footage of a scenic hill and a photogrammetry scan of a British tower. The process involved motion tracking the drone footage, integrating the 3D asset, ensuring consistent lighting, and compositing everything together. Finally, I used DaVinci Resolve to create a short reel showcasing the results.
This exercise was a valuable reminder of the importance of traditional VFX techniques, especially for someone primarily focused on full CGI scenes.
